Your Next Americuhn Presadent?

Michele Bachmann, my friends, is currently a leading political candidate for the GOP presidential nomination. Michele Bachmann, who owns a counseling firm which endorses “praying away the gay.” Michele Bachmann who has questioned evolution by offering, “Where do we say that a cell became a blade of grass, which became a starfish, which became a cat, which became a donkey, which became a human being?” Michele Bachmann who believes in the sanctity of life so passionately that when a blastocyst is destroyed, it’s a crime, but when a mother and her child die due to a preventable complicated pregnancy, or a pregnancy is the result of rape or child abuse, this is God’s divine will. Upon google search, I discovered scores of websites devoted to her “bat shit crazy” quotes and garbled mangling of facts.

So, if the terms “bat shit” and “crazy” are apparently so routinely paired with Ms. Bachmann and her fringe political views, WTF is with this magazine cover?!?

MICHELE-BACHMANN-NEWSWEEK

Am I the only one who is scared shitless by this picture? She looks like a Scanner. I feel like my head is about to explode.

Seriously. Look at her face. Just look deeply into...her eyes…really stare into…stare…intuh…her eye-eye-eye-I    hate     big     government    Nazis   Homosexuality    is    bondage     God     says    run    for     president    Nobel     prize    winning      scientists     believe     in    intelligent     design     Children     raised     in    slavery     better     off     than   having    single   mother    Orgy   government   has  spent    its     wad      Abortions    performed      in     public      schools     Lion    King   is     gay    propaganda     Carbon     dioxide    harmless  Founding    Fathers   worked    against    slavery    The       EPA      kills      jobs   The    swine   flu    is    Obama’s     fault    One      term    presi-i-ih uhhh…...

What the hell? Where am I? What just happened? Why am I wearing pearls and granny panties?! Why is there drool all over my chin?! Who just wrote all that?!

  1. The Newsweek cover makes her look insane -- which is what I call accuracy in reporting.

  2. The fact that a dangerously-delusional theocrat like Bachmann is a serious contender for the Republican Presidential nomination shows how far that party has fallen. If Goldwater were alive today he'd have some very harsh words for modern Republicans.

(The magazine cover is actually unfortunate since Newsweek clearly chose it to be deliberately unflattering, which has already allowed Bachmann's supporters to bellow about bias, sexism, etc., thus distracting everyone from the real issues.)

Her chance of becoming President is small, but not zero. Those who want to see her nominated on the grounds that it would ensure Obama's re-election are fools. The nominee of either major party always has some chance of winning. The country can't afford the risk.

  3. There is a good ten page article in The New Yorker. It talks about her influences and her faith. really really good. Awesomeness.

  4. We stink, but stinking is godly!!

Brothers… not many of you were wise…; not…influential; not…of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things…to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things...and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are…1Cor1:26-28 NIV.

Pure nihilism — “to nullify the things that are” — nothing has changed in two millennia.

The best defense against xians is not good reason, but a good nose.

  5. @Kriss, thanks. Scary article. Regarding calls of "sexism," may I say that, yes, we *should* be concerned with how a female political candidate might be subtly treated less equally, but I do not disrespect her *gender*. I disrespect her judgmental, harmful, divisive, and just plain dumb political views. I reject her presidential credentials and question her honesty. The picture is a piece of art. It reveals the nature of her ideas in a single photograph. The rambling bold words above like Lion King being gay propaganda, these are her quotes, all of them.

  6. It may be a deliberate attempt by Newsweek to show her in an unflattering way, but I'm not sure of that. She often looks like she is staring into the great beyond. When she was first spoofed by Saturday Night Live, they showed her giving a speech and staring everywhere but at the camera, because that's what she had done in her little news whatever-it-was. She reminds me of my cats, staring off into another dimension.
But, seriously, I read that New Yorker article a while back, along with several others, and I was seriously creeped out by the Dominionist quotes (head and not the tail) and her whole slant. If nothing else, her running for president has made more people aware that the extreme Christian Right's agenda is nightmarish.
And having been part of the Christian homeschooling movement until a few years ago, I can say from personal experience, there's a lot of her kind out there. And they do not see reason easily.
